As the Northern Art Fair prepares to return for another exciting year, I caught up with its founder, artist and organiser Sheryl Roberts, to talk about the journey of the fair, what visitors can expect, and why events like these are vital for both artists and art lovers alike.
I will be exhibiting at the fair this year – my first time as both an artist and visitor, so very excited to see the other artists and meet with visitors to chat all things art!
Q: Tell me a bit about the Northern Art Fair?
Sheryl Roberts: The Northern Art Fair is an event that celebrates creativity from across the North of England. It brings together both emerging and established artists in a friendly, welcoming environment. We aim to make art approachable and engaging for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned buyer or a curious newcomer.
Q: When did it start?
We launched the fair in 2021 with a mission to spotlight the incredible talent in our region. It was really about creating more opportunities for artists to showcase their work here in the North of England.
Q: What prompted you to set it up?
There was a clear gap in the market for a high-quality but accessible art fair in this part of the country. We wanted to create a space where people could connect directly with artists, discover new work, and support local creativity. That kind of space didn’t really exist here before.
Q: What can visitors expect this year if they come?
A fantastic variety! There’ll be painting, sculpture, photography, print, and mixed media from over 20 artists. We’ve got live demonstrations happening throughout the weekend, and a wide selection of both original pieces and affordable prints. Plus, we’re introducing an exciting new Plein Air event, running alongside the fair—so people can watch art being created live, outside.

Q: What learnings have you taken from each event, and how has the fair evolved?
We’ve learned a lot by listening to both artists and visitors. Each year we’ve fine-tuned the layout to improve flow, added outdoor exhibition spaces, and introduced more live art-making to bring the creative process closer to the audience. The fair’s atmosphere has grown warmer and more interactive every year.
Q: Why are events like this important to both artists and visitors?
For artists, it’s invaluable. It’s a rare opportunity to connect directly with audiences, to get feedback, and to network with fellow creatives. For visitors, it’s about more than just buying—it’s about experiencing creativity up close, learning something new, and hopefully leaving inspired. Art fairs can be a gateway into the wider world of art.
Q: For people who’ve never been to an art fair before, what advice would you give?
Don’t be intimidated! Talk to the artists—they love sharing what they do. If something catches your eye, ask questions about it. You don’t need to be an expert to buy art. Go with your gut and take your time – walk the fair once, then go back to what really stood out. Often, the piece that really speaks to you is the one you’ll come back to after your first walk around.
Q: Which artists are you especially excited to see this year?
So many! But I’m particularly excited to see Jina Gelder, who paints throughout the fair on her stand and creates wonderful lively little characterful animals… its just fascinating to see how they come to life! We also have a few emerging artists joining us for the first time, which always brings fresh energy to the fair.
Q: Finally, can you remind us when and where the fair is, and any tips for making the most of a visit?
Of course! The Northern Art Fair takes place on the 26th and 27th of July at The Upper Weardale Town Hall in St Johns Chapel. It’s such a beautiful area—perfect for a day out. The area around the village is absolutely stunning… there are lovely circular walks nearby, two dog-friendly pubs, and a charming café in the village. We’d recommend making a day of it. .
