Albert Gleizes

Sharing a birthday with one of my favourite artists – Lucian Freud, French artist Albert Gleizes was born on this date in 1881.

I stumbled on this painting he made of Brooklyn Bridge which seems typical of his cubist style.  In fact he actually wrote a treatise on Cubism with Jean Metzinger and is recognised as playing an important role in making America aware of modern art.  In the treaty, Cubisme they wrote:

Unless we are to condemn all modern painting, we must regard cubism as legitimate, for it continues modern methods, and we should see in it the only conception of pictorial art now possible. In other words, at this moment cubism is painting“.
