Joseph Stella

I came across this picture in an art book and lost myself for a couple of hours in a bit of rabbit hole searching for other works by Italian born, American artist Joseph Stella.

Joseph Stella

Born into a middle class Italian family in Potenza, Stella travelled to New York in 1896, initially to study to be a doctor, but soon choosing art as his cause studying at the New York School of Art.

Stella was considered a remarkable draftsman, recognized first as an academic realist, before working as an illustrator, publishing drawings in local newspapers and magazines.

Unhappy with the US, Stella returned to Italy (1909), where he embraced Modernism, his ultimate recognized style.
