Billed as an alternative event apparently this weekend, Covent Garden hosts its annual May Fayre and Puppet Festival. Now in its 42nd year the event brings together Punch and Judy professors from around the country for a day of old-fashioned fun.
According to Timeout and Visit London the grand procession takes place at 11am and concludes with a birthday toast to Mr Punch and is admission free.
Mr Punch also takes pride of place in the pulpit during the special church services which are filled with puppet shows and workshops, folk music, maypole dancing, clowns and refreshments all laid on by the Food Chain who raise funds for Londoners living with HIV.
I love random events like this – quintessentially English and a bit odd.
I thought in homage I’d dedicate today’s doodle to the puppets although not a patch on my favourite illustration of Mr Punch, created by illustrator Dave McKean
