Fiddler’s Green

January 30th is RNLI SOS Day.

Coming from the North East with family who have worked at Sea we know how important the work that the volunteer lifeboat crew and lifeguards who risk their lives every time they go out to sea do.

On our Christmas visit back up North we visited North Shields Fish Quay and took a picture of this sculpture. ‘Fiddler’s Green, created by Sculptor Ray Lonsdale, was unveiled in September 2017, dedicated to those who have lost their lives at sea.

The plaque beneath the statue reads:

“To the fishermen lost in the cold North Sea, and the ones who will be so, I’ll be seeing you all on Fiddler’s Green, be steady as you go.

“For Fiddler’s Green is a place I’ve heard tell, though no one really knows, where the fishermen go if they don’t go to hell, and no Arctic wind will blow.”

A beautiful sentiment and a beautiful view.
