Metropolis Premiere 10 Jan 1927 (Germany)

Dating back to the Weimar Period Metropolis was a German expressionist film by Fritz Lang, drawing imagery from Bauhaus, Cubist and Futurist designs. The movie poster was painted by Heinz Schulz-Neudamm and, as of 2016 was the most expensive movie poster to be auctioned when it was sold for almost $700,000 to a private buyer from the Austrian National Library in 2005, rumoured to be Leonardo DiCaprio.


There are believed to be only three other copies of the original poster to exist- including one in MOMA New York.


Metropolis is one of the most versioned posters since its’ release 90 years ago, most featuring variations of the Maschinemensch (literally “machine-person”), which Ralph McQuarrie admits to ‘taking liberties with’ in his design creation for Star Wars ‘C3PO’- clear when one looks at his early drawings:
