My theme for today is the Brothers Grimm. So here’s a few doodles inspired by the fairy tales.
German academics and authors, Jacob and Wilhelm collected and published folklore during the 19th century. Remembered today for bringing us classics such as Cinderella, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel and Rumpelstiltskin – a character I actually played in a primary school production.
There are some sinister lesser know facts about the tales, such as their use during the 1930s and 40s, as propaganda by the Third Reich and the original tales themselves are terrrifying but as the brothers were born in 1785 and 1786 they can’t be blamed for their later uses so you can enjoy guiltfree.
Some of my personal favourites are the books illustrated by Arthur Rackham which manage to combine a beautiful fairylike quality with quite a dark, sinister tone.
