Happy Birthday Henri Matisse

“What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity, devoid of troubling or depressing subject-matter, an art which could be for every mental worker, for the businessman as well as the man of letters, for example, a soothing, calming influence on the mind, something like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue.”  Matisse

On this date in 1869 French artist Henri Matisse was born.  Probably best known for his brightly coloured abstract creations he was a revolutionary in the art work, helping to define radical contemporary art in the 20th century.

I was very lucky to be in Venice (many, many years ago) when they were hosting a huge retrospective of his work and whilst I was familiar and at the time loved his later work created from brightly coloured painted paper it was amazing to see his early more traditional paintings and wander around in chronological order to see how his art developed and changed over time.
