On this day in 1922 one of my favourite artists Lucian Freud was born in Berlin. Son of a Jewish architect and grandson of Sigmund Freud, Lucian moved with his family to the UK in 1933 to escape the rise of the Nazis. His paintings are haunting, giving a sense of the raw, psychological state of his sitters. I’ve sadly never had the opportunity to attend a solo exhibition of his art but I have managed to see a few of his paintings in the flesh.
In 1980 John Lennon was shot dead outside his New York apartment building.
In 1983 cameras were allowed into the House of lords after members voted in favour of live broadcasts
In 1984 Frankie Goes to Hollywood topped the UK charts with their single The Power of Love
