Norman Cornish

In our dining room we have a picture of a charcoal sketch of an old man which is a print of one of Norman Cornish’s.  My mum and dad used to have the original and bought prints of the original for my brother and I.

This sparked a love of Cornish’s work, partly because it captures a moment in time  in the history of the North East with active pits and ship building but mostly just because I love his style and the characters he has portrayed.  I’m also very jealous of how he manages to bring people to life with just a few seemingly casual marks on paper.

I was also very lucky to see some of his original work close up at an exhibition at the university.

If you want to take a look at his body of work this book is a beautiful addition to any coffee table or bookshelf –
