World National Nursery Rhyme Week

The event is open to people who have or works with children under the age of 7.   They challenge people to teach a different nursery rhyme each day for the full week and provide activity packs as support – http://www.musicbugs.co.uk/world-nursery-rhyme-week/

Nursery Rhyme

And this year they have selected one of my favourite rhymes – Bobby Shafto’s Gone to Sea

Bobby Shafto’s gone to sea,

Silver buckles at his knee;

He’ll come back and marry me,

Bonny Bobby Shafto!

Bobby Shafto’s bright and fair,

Panning out his yellow hair;

He’s my love for evermore,

Bonny Bobby Shafto

Thought to be based on a real life person from County Wicklow, Ireland

It was used by the supporters of Robert Shatfo, an eighteenth-century member of parliament (MP)  for County Durham, a region close to where I grew up in the North East of England.

For those who like a sketchbook challenge how about illustrating one of your favourite Nursery Rhyme characters?
